Working as a Yango driver in Lusaka continues to be a hazardous occupation as another driver falls victim to a fatal attack by people he thought were ordinary clients.
The 42-year-old Suzyo Mwale thought he’d picked a fare from Kalingalinga on September 28 and drove his passengers to Makeni where he was sadly stabbed in the neck around 01:00 am the next day. His assailants left the knife lodged in his neck.
Mwale was able to call for help and was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
In addition to stabbing and leaving him for dead, the criminals fled the scene with his phones and wallet containing an undisclosed sum of money.
Just three months ago, another Yango driver, Aaron Katongo, was killed. He was discovered dead after missing from his family for some days following a shift. In August 2023, driver Nicholas Chishimba also fell victim.
It remains unclear what protections Yango has put in place for the drivers and community of users of its services.
Mwale leaves behind a wife and two young children.
