The Zambia Police Service has officially announced the arrest of Mr. Kelvin Mutale Sampa on multiple charges, including obtaining money by false pretences, possession of counterfeit notes, and possession of materials intended for forgery. These charges are in violation of Sections 309, 370(c), and 351 of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
According to the police statement, Mr. Sampa, in collaboration with Mr. Mabo Martin and other unidentified individuals, allegedly deceived Japanese national Mr. Satoshi Sakamoto into providing USD 80,000. They falsely claimed that the funds were needed to assist in purchasing refined gold in Zambia.
Additionally, Mr. Sampa was found in possession of 49 counterfeit USD 100 notes, totaling USD 4,900. The counterfeit currency was presented as legitimate.
Moreover, authorities discovered paper and other implements intended for the production of counterfeit currency notes. These items were reportedly meant for illegal use.
The alleged offences occurred between June and September 2024 within Lusaka District. Mr. Sampa has been formally charged and is expected to appear in court shortly.
The Zambia Police Service reiterated its commitment to public safety and the integrity of the nation’s financial systems. They urged the public to exercise caution during financial transactions and report any suspicious activities to local police.
