The Zambian government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), has signed contracts for the construction of new markets and the expansion of bus stations, with a total investment of K166,295,439.67.
MLGRD Permanent Secretary Mr. Maambo Haamaundu announced that significant improvements will be made in the Eastern Province, including the Chipata Bus Station at a cost of K42,627,398.50, the Katete Bus Station for K21,702,338.78, the Lundazi Bus Station at K24,311,882.00, and the Sinda Bus Station at K15,037,762.50.
Additionally, the government plans to allocate K6,354,947.08 for the completion of the Namwala Modern Market and will rehabilitate Nakambala Market in Mazabuka at a cost of K8,736,554.64. The Mpika Bus Station will also be completed with an investment of K24,862,985.43. Other projects include the Chavuma Bus Station, Kasama Fire Station, and Sesheke Transit Bus Station, contributing further to the overall investment.
Mr. Haamaundu confirmed that contracts have been finalized and construction is expected to begin shortly. He expressed the government’s commitment to modernizing these facilities to provide a better trading environment for vendors and transport operators.
The funding for some of these projects is supported by KfW, a German development bank, reinforcing the government’s goal of enhancing infrastructure for the benefit of local communities.
