Bowman Should Spare Zambians his Imprudence

Bowman Lusambo is such an incorrigible handful!

For someone who is facing a potential three year jail sentence, the least we can expect from Lusambo is remorse —nothing else.

The Luanshya magistrate court last week established that on April 11, 2019, Lusambo attacked Stanley Musukwa, a 58-year-old National Democratic Congress (NDC) member, using a machete, and caused him severe head and facial injuries.

Infact, according to Chishimba Kambwili, the then NDC leader, Lusambo and team also beat and hacked Obed Kasongo —who later died—during the Roan constituency bye-election.

Kambwili at the time of the development alleged the beating of Kasongo was a case of aggravated robbery because the victim was not only beaten but was also robbed of three phones and a K15,000.

While a docket was opened, Kambwili alleged that he had been reliably informed that the assailants could not be arrested supposedly because of their political connections at the time.

And last Thursday, things got worse for Lusambo when the Luanshya magistrate Court convicted him of unlawful wounding in absentia and because he was not present in court, a bench warrant for his arrest was issued.

He was later to be found hiding in the ceiling board of his house where he was smoked out, promptly arrested and taken to Chilenje police.

What was shocking was his behavior today when he emerged from Chilenje police station in the presence of police who were about to start a six hour long journey with the convict to Luanshya where he will be sentenced.

“Okay guys, we are strong, we are coming back in 2026! We’re very strong, we are coming back to take power in 2026,” Lusambo voluntarily shouted at a horde of journalists that gathered to cover the scene.

Now this is where we have a problem — why put up a show when, you, Bowman, hacked people in Luanshya until someone is suspected to have died from the wounds you inflicted on them?

What’s the connection between the heinous crimes you committed against a fellow human being, a father, husband and breadwinner yet all you can scream is, “we are coming back to take power in 2026!”

Is this man remorseful or him and his ilk are so preoccupied with getting back political power that the people they injured don’t matter? So, if ever Bowman and group were again entrusted with power, what else will they do with it —kill more and more people; settle scores?

How about the case in which Bowman has been reported to police for allegedly obtaining K850,000 by false pretences by transacting in a a fake sale of house to an MP?

How about the case where the Lusaka High Court has ordered Lusambo to refund K560, 000 to a client he defrauded over two pieces of land — does that also require him to get back to power?

These cases are self inflicted wounds. There is nothing political about these cases.

That is why we have avoided talking about the many cases still going on in the courts of law against the people —you and me.

What we expect from Bowman is a moment of introspection because his felonies are legitimate.

He should spare us the charade we saw at Chilenje police today.
