Zambia Army bomb disposal experts have successfully destroyed more than 100 live mortar shells discovered at a dumpsite in Kapiri Mposhi. The shells, which were found to be active, were unearthed during an ‘Explosive Ordnance Disposal’ operation on Saturday by personnel stationed in Mufulira. The 109 shells, ranging in sizes of 81mm and 60mm, were deemed a serious threat to public safety.
The origin and timing of the illegal dump remain unknown. Colonel Mpezeli, Commandant of Lukanga ABTA, who oversaw the operation, warned that the bombs posed an immediate danger to human life. He also urged the public to report any suspicious activities to local police or security officials.
Kapiri Mposhi Town Council’s Public Relations Officer, Chris Mulaliki, confirmed the operation and highlighted the risks associated with unexploded ordnance in the area.
