The United Party for National Development (UPND) has emerged victorious in the Lukanga Ward local government by-election, with its candidate Clement Sikifanso securing 386 votes. His closest rival, independent candidate George Kabaki, received 184 votes, while Citizen First’s Furnwell Musonda garnered 77 votes. Socialist Party’s John Kalunga, who also contested the seat in 2021, finished with 36 votes.
The result was officially declared by Returning Officer Fredah Chisale at approximately 20:40 hours at Neemtree Secondary School, the designated tallying centre. Ms. Chisale reported that 692 votes were cast, with 10 ballots rejected.
Sikifanso replaces Sibanze Belemu, who was disqualified from office earlier this year following a conviction for theft of building materials. In his victory speech, Sikifanso expressed his gratitude to the electorate and vowed to deliver on his promises, focusing on improving the road and drainage infrastructure in Lukanga Ward. His commitment to the community signals a proactive approach to addressing local development issues.
