Former Zanaco head coach Wedson Nyirenda says the club still retains a realistic chance of turning their fortunes around and finish in a respectable position in the MTN Super League this season.
Yesterday, Nyirenda tendered in his resignation at Zanaco after a poor season so far having recorded just one win in 11 fixtures to find themselves in the relegation zone in 16th place with just 9 points.
Speaking in an interview after his departure from the club, Nyirenda said he opted to leave the club due to the team’s continued streak of poor results even after assembling a formidable side.
“When the team was drowning with six games to the end of the season, I raised my hand to come and offer assistance to the club I love. And indeed with the technical team and the players I found, we fought hard and survived. We have just started the new season and built a good balance in the team but results haven’t balanced with performance,” Nyirenda said.
However, the former national team gaffer still remains optimistic the Bankers are capable of resuscitating their campaign and finish in a much higher position this season.
“With 24 matches in hand, I believe the players and my technical staff have what it takes to move on and finish at a very good position,” Nyirenda said.
Meanwhile, Nyirenda revealed he does not intend on taking a break from coaching and will be looking to take up a new challenge elsewhere while also leaving the door open for a possible return to Sunset Stadium in future.
“I have so much in my hands but I remain open to talks with any other club or national team to take up a new project. My door will never close for Zanaco. Never burn bridges behind you when you leave. All the best my team,” Nyirenda said after his third stint with the Bankers came to an end yesterday.
