Child Marriage and Other Gender Disadvantages Need Long-Term Solutions – GRZ

Must read

Stakeholders have been urged to come up with long-term solutions to address child marriage, which continues to disempower many Zambian girls and women.

Speaking yesterday at the opening of the General Assembly for the Non-Governmental Gender Organization Coordinating Council (NGOCC) in Lusaka the Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Doreen Mwamba, said gender inequality was still the cause of many social issues disproportionately impacting women and girls.

Attributing these challenges, including women’s low participation in politics, gender-based violence, child marriage, and teenage pregnancies, to deeply rooted patriarchy the minister, represented by her Information and Media counterpart Cornelius Mweetwa said this manifests in many ways and perpetuates the gender gap.

She said the government believes women to be the bedrock of political development and play a crucial role in Zambia’s political landscape.

She was glad that civil society organizations continue to supplement the government’s efforts and endeavor to see “empowered women who will contribute to the much-needed development” of our communities.
