A shooting incident in Lusaka’s Rhodes Park has resulted in multiple facial injuries to an employee of Rapid Response Security.
Police spokesman Rae Hamoonga said in his statement that the victim, Febby Kabanda, was injured when the gun was discharged by Sydney Chiyanga, a driver of the said security company while on duty at the Zambia Banking Institute of Financial Services.
According to the report, Kabanda, a gun handler, left the firearm, which was in use during the security team’s operations, on the seat of the vehicle she had earlier been in.
“At the time of the incident, Sydney Chiyanga was seated in the driver’s seat and Febby Kabanda was initially in the front passenger seat with the firearm facing upwards. However, Ms. Kabanda later moved to another vehicle, a Toyota Vitz with registration number BAC 8658, which was parked adjacent to their security vehicle, leaving the firearm on the seat,” explained Hamoonga.
He said that upon noticing that the firearm was not properly secured, Chiyanga attempted to lift it and in the process pulled the trigger and fired the gun.
The pellets struck the front left door of the Toyota Vitz, penetrating it and hitting Kabanda in the face.
She was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital where is currently receiving medical attention.
Chiyanga is in detention for the offense of intending to cause grievous harm, while an inquiry has been opened to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
