CJ Malila Castigated Lawyers Misusing the Media

Must read

Chief Justice Dr. Mumba Malila has denounced a troubling trend of lawyers misusing media platforms to mislead the public.

Speaking at the admission of new lawyers to the bar, Malila did not mince his words as he called out the unprofessional conduct of individuals who, under the guise of expertise, erode the credibility of the legal profession.

“The legal profession is pre-eminent and envied by many,” Malila emphasised. “You are stepping into a noble field where trailblazers have set the standard. Your duty is to uphold those standards, not to emulate those who tarnish the profession with unethical behavior,” he said

In his address, the Chief Justice urged the new lawyers to prioritize three core values: character, loyalty to principle, and respect for colleagues and authorities.

He reminded them that a lawyer’s reputation is their most valuable asset, cautioning against behaviors that could stain their integrity.

“Character is what we do when we think no one is watching,” he said. “Your work as legal practitioners will thrive on trust. Without trust, there is no foundation for your success in this profession.”

He warned that any lawyer who strays into dishonesty risks being disbarred, citing past examples of practitioners who faced severe consequences for impropriety.

“Do not, as legal practitioners, join or turn yourselves into skilled liars, dissemblers, manipulators and propagandists. Do not employ the implements of legal practice to bedevil and confuse and dismay the gullible public. Instead remain the salt of the legal profession and offer honest and trustworthy service always,” he admonished.

Malila reserved some of his harshest criticism for lawyers who seek the media spotlight to argue cases lost in court, describing such actions as “ritually dishonest” and damaging to the profession.

“Cases are won or lost in court, not in the media,” he said firmly.

“Some lawyers, after losing in court, take their arguments to the press, portraying themselves as victims and misleading the public. This behaviour is unethical and only serves to undermine public confidence in the judiciary.”

He implored the new lawyers to avoid falling into the trap of seeking public sympathy or indulging in populist narratives at the expense of professional integrity.

Malila reminded the newly admitted lawyers that success in the legal profession is built on diligence, discipline, and dedication.

He condemned those who proclaim themselves “experts” without the necessary qualifications or achievements to back their claims.

“True expertise comes from rigorous study, significant contributions to legal thought, and a track record of excellence,” he explained. “Avoid shortcuts. Let your work and integrity speak for themselves.”
