A 29-year-old woman of Lusaka’s Chipata Compound has been sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting a 14-year-old girl with a cooking stick.
Lusaka Magistrate Amy Masoja handed down the sentence, noting Mary Phiri’s lack of remorse for the offence.
The incident occurred on November 21, 2024, when Phiri attacked her young neighbour, with a cooking stick, causing bodily harm.
Phiri claimed she was upset because the victim had hit her with a piece of wood, causing her to bleed and fear a miscarriage.
Despite her plea of guilty, Phiri showed no remorse for her actions, prompting Magistrate Masoja to take a firm stance.
“I note the demeanor of the convict, who takes this so casually and is not taking the gravity of the offense she has committed,” Masoja said.
