Must read

Justice Evans Hamaundu has been hailed as a paragon of fairness, impartiality, and unwavering dedication to justice as he bids farewell to the bench after 29 years of distinguished service.

His retirement, coinciding with his birthday, marked the culmination of a remarkable journey in Zambia’s judiciary.

During a special valedictory session held in his honor yesterday, Chief Justice Dr. Mumba Malila praised Justice Hamaundu’s exceptional contributions to the judiciary. “His legacy will inspire and guide the judiciary and legal profession for generations to come. He epitomized fairness and impartiality,” said Dr. Malila.

Justice Hamaundu, in his farewell speech, expressed profound gratitude for the fulfilling career he enjoyed during his tenure.

He acknowledged finding immense job satisfaction in his role and extended heartfelt thanks to the judiciary and his family for their support, which enabled him to serve effectively as a judge.

The event was attended by family members, including his wife, Magistrate Faides Hamaundu, and notable figures like former Chief Justice Ernest Sakala.

Beginning in the Legal Aid Department in 1984, he served as a Legal Aid Counsel, where he honed his skills representing the underprivileged.

He transitioned to private practice as an Assistant Advocate at Mbaluku Sikazwe and Company, further solidifying his reputation for legal expertise.

His career took a corporate turn when he served as Legal Counsel and Administration Manager at Maamba Collieries Limited, later becoming Group Company Secretary for National Media Corporation Limited.

The judiciary called in 1996, and Justice Hamaundu began his tenure as a Resident Magistrate. He served as Deputy Registrar, Registrar of the High Court, and finally as a Supreme Court Judge, where his influence and judgments left an indelible mark.

At the valedictory session, State Counsel Patrick Kabesha celebrated Justice Hamaundu’s exemplary service, humorously quipping about the permanency of judicial retirement. “It’s good to retire while the applause continues. In this profession, there is no alebwelelapo (coming back),” he joked, eliciting laughter from the audience.

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) President, Lungisani Zulu, lauded Justice Hamaundu’s humility and professionalism.

“You have been a true asset to the bench and the legal profession. Your respectful demeanor has shown that being a judge does not mean screaming at counsel,” he remarked, drawing nods of agreement.
