Zesco Silence Nkana to Reinvigorate Title Charge

Zesco United have moved closer to the top of the MTN Super League after a resounding 2-0 win over rivals Nkana, sending a strong statement in their charge for a 10th league title.

Level on 33 points, the two sides entered the encounter aiming for victory to retain the top spot on the Super League table.

Zesco made a strong start to the match, with midfielder Leonard Mulenga hitting the crossbar with a ferocious strike from within shooting range in the 19th minute.

Kalampa were disadvantaged 10 minutes later when dependable center-half Chitoshi Chinga was substituted due to injury and replaced by Stephen Chulu.

Nonetheless, the two sides went into the interval on level terms, with the hosts leading in terms of ball possession and chances created.

Nkana returned as a much-improved side in the second half but failed to make the most of their chances, allowing Zesco to open the floodgates.

Ivorian striker Freddy Michael beat goalkeeper Patrick Chooma from close range at the hour mark after benefiting from a sumptuous pass by his Cameroonian teammate Vitalis Gantar.

Substitute Edward Lungu extended the hosts’ lead against the run of play in the 84th minute, sealing an important victory for interim coach Emmanuel Siwale’s side.

Zesco have since moved into second place on the Super League table with 36 points, only separated by goal difference from leaders Kabwe Warriors after today’s result.

Nkana have since dropped into fourth place on the table with 33 points after recording their second defeat in 11 fixtures under the guidance of Mwenya Chipepo.
