Must read

The World Bank has given the Zambian government a new grant of $292 million as part of the Zambia-Tanzania Interconnector Project (ZTIP).

This funding will enable Zambia to access more sustainable and affordable energy through ZTIP.

Additionally, the project supports both regional and national initiatives aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the energy sector and promoting universal electricity access.

Achim Fock, the World Bank Country Manager for Zambia, noted that the power sector in Zambia is facing significant financial viability challenges that are impeding economic growth.

Mr. Fock said in a statement that through ZTIP, the World Bank will collaborate with Zambia to enhance power transmission capacity between Zambia and Tanzania, thereby connecting East and Southern Africa.

Yadviga Semikolenova, the World Bank’s Energy Practice Manager for Eastern and Southern Africa, said that Zambia will bolster its resilience to climate-related shocks.

Ms. Semikolenova also emphasized that the project will strengthen the Zambian transmission system necessary for facilitating new renewable energy generation projects and expanding access.

Of the total financing, $245 million comes from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA), $17 million from the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and $30 million from the European Union.
