Govt Has Kept Promise to Maintain Rule of Law — Kawana

Must read

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana says the New Dawn government has not failed to keep its promise to govern the country based on the principle of maintaining the rule of law.

Kawana has dispelled claims by opposition political figures and other individuals that human rights standards in the country have diminished under the UPND administration.

Speaking on Prime TV last evening, Kawana stated that the allegations of human rights infringements are being peddled only by those who have been found on the wrong side of the law due to unlawful conduct.

“When you listen carefully to the people who are crying over the so-called human rights abuses, it is usually individuals who have broken the law. When the law has caught up with them, they then turn around and claim that their human rights are being abused,” Kawana said.

Kawana added that Republican President Hakainde Hichilema and the New Dawn government remain committed to fulfilling their pledge to maintain the rule of law in the country.

“The President was very clear from day one that ours would be an administration that anchors itself on the rule of law, and we have done just that,” he said.

He further referenced the recent visit by UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan and the recommendations made in her preliminary report as proof of the New Dawn government’s commitment to upholding human rights standards.

“After all that, the report the UN Special Rapporteur presented to the country stated that what they found on the ground is that the human rights record in Zambia is now far better than it was under the previous PF administration, which abused human rights,” he said.

Kawana was speaking when he appeared on Prime TV’s “Oxygen of Democracy” program last evening.
