First Quantum Minerals Takes Environmental Action: Plants 11,000 Trees to Reclaim Mine Dump Sites

Must read

In a proactive move towards environmental conservation, First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has undertaken a significant tree planting initiative at its Sentinel Mine located in the Kalumbila District of North Western Province, Zambia. The endeavor aims to reclaim mine dump sites and restore ecological balance in areas affected by mining activities.

A total of 11,000 trees have been meticulously planted across several dump sites where vegetation growth had been stymied. Frackson Sikita, Environmental Superintendent at Sentinel Mine, emphasized the mine’s commitment to environmental stewardship and highlighted the implementation of various remediation measures to safeguard the natural surroundings.

Sikita revealed that last year alone, the mine nurtured 35,000 plants, with 11,000 eventually transplanted onto an eight-hectare plot. Acacia polycantha, selected for its soil enrichment properties, has been prominently featured in the reclamation efforts, alongside a variety of grass species aimed at remediating waste dumps. Additionally, indigenous tree species such as Pterocarpus Tinctorius, commonly known as the Mukula tree, have been preserved to maintain biodiversity.

The initiative drew attention from a 25-member delegation of Malawian environmental health practitioners, sponsored by Nvumabaranda Group of Companies, who visited the Sentinel mine site for a benchmarking tour. Sikita elaborated on the mine’s comprehensive approach to environmental restoration and underscored its ongoing commitment to sustainable practices.

During the visit, the Malawian delegation witnessed firsthand the ongoing reclamation efforts at the mine dump site, where eucalyptus trees are being planted to reclaim land previously used as garbage disposal sites. Collins Kamuloni, Vice President of the Malawi Environmental Health Association, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to observe practical public health practices and glean insights into environmental conservation strategies.

The delegation also toured the mine’s operations, including the largest open-pit mine in Zambia, gaining valuable insights into responsible mining practices and environmental management. Subsequently, they visited hospitals owned and operated by Nvumabaranda Group of Companies in Lumwana and Kalumbila, experiencing firsthand the company’s commitment to community development and healthcare provision.

Kennedy Nduna, Chief Executive Officer of Nvumabaranda Group of Companies, led the delegation on a comprehensive tour of various infrastructure projects, including housing units, business centers, and healthcare facilities, showcasing the company’s holistic approach to sustainable development.

Sapalo Kachiwala, Environmental Manager at Sentinel Mine, reiterated the mine’s dedication to environmental protection, emphasizing the significance of ongoing efforts in safeguarding the environment. Kachiwala underscored the substantial investment and commitment required for effective environmental management, emphasizing the mine’s involvement in initiatives such as indoor residual spraying for mosquito control.

The tree planting initiative and broader environmental conservation efforts underscore FQM’s proactive approach to sustainable mining practices, setting a commendable example for the industry and reaffirming its commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
