Against the backdrop of pressing budgetary limitations exacerbated by a severe drought, Zambia’s Minister of Youth, Sports, and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, has appealed to athletes for patience as the government navigates competing priorities, notably the urgent need to address food shortages.
In a press briefing yesterday, Minister Nkandu reiterated the government’s commitment to compensating athletes who proudly represented the nation at recent international events, including the Ghana and Olympic games. However, he underscored the critical necessity of prioritizing immediate needs, particularly amidst the prevailing drought crisis.
“To our sports men and women, while we advocate for the release of these funds, it’s crucial to recognize that we are facing a disaster situation due to the drought. Let’s also bear in mind that we are still grappling with the aftermath of the recent cholera outbreak, which poses risks to all, including yourselves,” remarked Nkandu.
Acknowledging the frustration among athletes awaiting their dues, Nkandu appealed for understanding, emphasizing unity and patriotism in times of adversity. He assured athletes of the government’s steadfast commitment to their welfare while urging them to demonstrate patience and resilience during these challenging times.
“While the government is dedicated to settling any outstanding payments owed to our sports men and women, we must also acknowledge the pressing need to address food shortages affecting our citizens,” Nkandu emphasized. “We urge our athletes to prioritize patriotism and understanding as we navigate these competing demands.”
In a cautionary note, Nkandu addressed attempts by some individuals to politicize the government’s handling of athlete payments, urging them to refrain from exploiting the situation for political gain.
“I have observed certain politicians, some of whom previously held the highest office in the land, now attempting to capitalize on this issue for political mileage. Yet, when they were in power, they offered little assistance to our athletes,” Nkandu stated. “Let us not forget that politics and sports are fundamentally distinct realms.”
Nkandu also announced the allocation of K10 million from a planned K30 million grant to local authorities for sports development at the grassroots level. This initiative seeks to enhance sports infrastructure and promote greater community participation in sports activities, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to fostering a vibrant sporting culture across Zambia.
