The Lusaka High Court has ruled that Levy Mwanawasa and Company, a law firm headed by former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa, must pay $100,000 to NL Alterra, a Belgium-based firm.
This payment settles the dispute over the $58,000 owed to NL Alterra, which Levy Mwanawasa Law Firm failed to remit after receiving it on behalf of NL Alterra. The settlement, agreed upon in a consent order, will be paid in instalments and must be completed by August 30, 2024.
NL Alterra initiated legal action against Levy Mwanawasa Law Firm for its refusal to transfer the $58,000, which originated from the sale of a property. The funds were received by the law firm while providing legal services to NL Alterra in a separate matter.
