The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has given the green light to ZESCO’s proposed electricity tariff adjustments, citing a substantial energy deficit of 700 Megawatts and the depreciation of the national currency, the Kwacha.
Under the approved adjustments, households falling under the R. Two (2) Tier tariff structure will bear the brunt of a significant 10.5 percent hike. This translates to an increase from ninety-five Ngwee to one Kwacha five Ngwee per Kilowatt-Hour for electricity consumption exceeding 300 kilowatt-hours.
However, it’s the commercial consumers utilizing over 500 kilowatt-hours who will feel the pinch most severely. They will now face a tariff of two Kwacha forty-four Ngwee per kilowatt-hour, up from the previous rate of two Kwacha twenty-two Ngwee per kilowatt-hour. These tariff adjustments mark yet another economic challenge for both domestic and commercial consumers already grappling with a daunting 13.8 percent inflation rate
