Three days after notifying the public of modifications to the National Health Insurance Scheme benefits package, the Scheme’s manager, NHIMA, has u-turned on its decision following a directive by the Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo.
On 2 May, Masebo directed the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) to withdraw its notice advising the public of imminent changes to the benefits package covered by the scheme on grounds that NHIMA did not seek government approval prior to communicating the changes, contrary to what the law stipulates.
Masebo further directed NHIMA to instead embark on consultations after withdrawing the notice.
NHIMA’s Head of Public Relations, King Syacika, consequently issued a press statement lste yesterday to withdraw the earlier notice issued on 30 April.
“The notice which stated that the Authority had made some Amendments to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Benefits Package effective 1st July 2024, has been withdrawn with immediate effect. The Authority advises Members of NHIMA, accredited Health Care Providers, and the public to disregard the earlier notice,” Syacika stated.
He further said the matter of the Benefits Package requires wide consultation with various stakeholders before any modifications can be made.
“Therefore, NHIMA will advise the nation on the next steps after further consultations with various stakeholders.”
NHIMA has apologized for “any panic or inconvenience caused.”
