Newly crowned MTN Super League champions Red Arrows have been invited to participate in the 2024 CECAFA Kagame Cup, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania and Zanzibar next month.
CECAFA, the East African football regional body, confirmed the list of clubs on Monday evening. The Zambian champions are among three guest clubs invited to participate in the tournament, which is slated for July 6 to 22.
CECAFA’s Executive Director, John Auka Gecheo, said having Arrows, Democratic Republic of Congo giants TP Mazembe, and Malawi’s Nyasa Big Bullets take part in the tournament would stiffen competition and give the East African region clubs proper preparation for the CAF inter-clubs competition.
“This competition will help our teams in the zone prepare better in the pre-season ahead of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, which start in August. Having top sides from DR Congo, Malawi, and Zambia will also spice up our club competition and give our teams a real test,” Gecheo said.
Arrows is awaiting an official tournament invite before confirming participation.
The last Zambian side to have participated in the Kagame Cup was Green Eagles in 2019. The Choma-based side finished in third place.
