Barely three weeks after the death of their Vice President Saulos Chilima, Malawians are mourning again following the death of iconic musician and social activist Lucius Banda, affectionately known as Soldier Lucius Banda.
Banda , who was a devoted member of Chilima’s party, the United Transformation Party (UTM), also served as campaign director for the grouping as well as President Lazarous Chakwera’s advisor. He died from chronic kidney complications in South Africa and was 53 years old.
Many Malawians will forever remember that on June 8th, Chilima was in South Africa to visit Banda in hospital. Two days later, Chilima was himself dead in a plane crash.
Banda’s songs resonated with audiences, addressing themes of poverty, injustice, love, and resilience.
Starting his musical journey with Aleluya Band and later forming his own band, Zembani. Banda’s music, a blend of Afro-pop, reggae, and traditional Malawian rhythms, captivated audiences both locally and internationally.
His politically charged debut album, “Son of the Poor Man,” challenged Malawi’s regime, solidifying his place in the country’s music scene.
Despite facing health challenges, Banda remained committed to his music and political career, even venturing into politics in 2003.
His recent health battles with high blood pressure and kidney failure showcased his resilience and unwavering dedication.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes, with many remembering him for his musical talents and his advocacy for social change.
As Malawians mourn the loss of Banda, his legacy as a musical pioneer and political advocate will continue to inspire future generations.
He leaves behind a profound impact on Malawi’s music industry and political landscape, his passion for arts and social change remembered by all who knew him.
