The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has recorded a 47% reduction in the number of road traffic accidents (RTAs) for the first quarter of 2024 compared to the preceding three-month period.
While acknowledging the significant decline, Chief Executive Officer Amon Mweemba kept his concern over the country’s generally high number of road traffic incidents, including RTAs.
RTSA revealed that between January and March of 2024, the number of recorded road crashes was 4,523; down from 9,549 between October and December, 2024.
“In the first quarter of this year, we recorded a reduction in the number of road traffic crashes from 9,549 in the last quarter of last year to 4,523. This a 47 percent reduction, which is a huge reduction. It’s almost 50 percent,” Mweemba said.
He also said RTSA appreciates the government’s commitment to promoting road safety, hence, the agency moving in to help provide better equipment and other road safety necessities.
“That is why we value the government’s political will to promoting road safety and we are also aware that concerted efforts are needed to support those who work to prevent crashes or respond to the aftermath through emergency services,” he said.
Mweemba was speaking on Tuesday when RTSA donated wheelchairs worth K26,500 to Chawama Level 1 Hospital in Lusaka.
