Zambia’s youth football talent hub and MTN Super League newcomer Atletico Lusaka has sent two of its players to Italy to attend trials at top-flight club Cagliari Calcio.
Joseph Liteta, a winger, and Timothy Sichalwe who plays as an attacking midfielder, arrived in Sardina, Cagliari’s base, on Tuesday and start their try outs at the club today.
A source at Atletico has revealed exclusively to Zambian Digest that the two players will train with the club’s Under-20 team and hope to impress in order to earn permanent contracts.
The source further revealed that Sichalwe, 21, will be assessed with view of potentially joining the senior team should he impress the club.
“They will start preseason with Cagliari U-20 team tomorrow. Timothy is under observation for the senior team like King [Mutandwa] last season,” the source revealed.
Atletico expects to send out more players to attend trials at Cagliari through the two clubs’ strengthened partnership.
“Cagliari and Atletico have a strong partnership for young players since two years ago when Cagliari’s president was in Zambia for business and holiday,” the source added.
Last year, Atletico sent Mutandwa to Cagliari where the young striker impressed during his time with the U-20 team. He subsequently got promoted to the senior team by legendary Italian manager Claudio Ranieri. Mutandwa has since earned a senior team cap to the national team.
