As communications technology-based services, including mobile money, increase in the country, the government is seeking to increase internet penetration and has announced that 300 more communication towers will be built by the end of this year.
Officiating at the inaugural ICT Consumer Dialogue Forum in Lusaka, Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati said that the erection of the 300 telecoms towers in different parts of the country is intended to increase connectivity and internet penetration.
The government is cooperating with the telecoms companies and other private partners in this endeavor.
Mutati said the imperative for increased connectivity is supported by the continued growth of Zambia’s ICT sector. Mobile money, which has broadened financial inclusion, is also a factor.
At the end of 2023, Zambia recorded K460 billion in mobile money transactions value.
Mutati hoped that adding 300 more communication towers will enable more Zambians to participate in the digital economy, including accessing many services that are now offered online.
