Republican President Hakainde Hichilema has given K100,000 to the five families of the victims who died in the Macro Link Mine accident along the Ndola-Mufulira road on the Copperbelt Province.
Each of the five affected families has been compensated K20,000 by the President to help cushion their burden following their loss.
Copperbelt Province minister Elisha Matambo delivered the donation on behalf of President Hichilema in Ndola yesterday.
โToday, we met family members of Macro Link Mine accident and mine management where we disclosed that Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema has given each of five family accident victims K20,000 that happened few months ago along Ndola- Mufulira road on the Copperbeltโ Matambo wrote on his official Facebook page yesterday.
Matambo further announced the conclusion to the matter around the unfortunate incident after meeting the victimsโ families as well as other stakeholders.
โOur Head of State has extended the same help he extended to families of Sensele Mine accident victims in Chingola. The five mine accident victims at Macro Link Mine were all retrieved and buried at Mitengo Cemetery in Ndola. What remained was the closure of the matter, hence the final meeting that we held at our office today after the agreement was arrived at from all stakeholders.โ
The minister also disclosed that additional compensation and help was already given to the families through the Macro Link Mine management and the Workers Compensation Fund Control Board.
โWe further informed the family members that Macro Link Mine Management and Workersโ Compensation Fund Control Board have also paid each of five families undisclosed amount of money towards the compensation of those who died,โ he stated.
โWe were also happy to learn that mine management has pledged to employ one person from each of five affected families so that those who will be employed will continue helping families that have remained behind.โ
In conclusion, Matambo expressed his gratitude to President Hichilema and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) for the support rendered to the families whom he encouraged remain united.

Five Zambian workers and two Chinese nationals lost their lives earlier this year in January after they got trapped in a flooded underground shaft at Macro Link Mine Resources Limited.
