The Zambian government has acknowledged a lapse in communication regarding unpaid allowances for athletes who competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics, a situation highlighted by medalist Muzala Samukonga.
Samukonga, who secured Zambia’s first Olympic medal in 28 years, criticized the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Arts after athletes returned home without receiving the promised daily allowances and winning bonuses. He urged the Ministry to settle all outstanding payments dating back to 2022, noting the negative impact on athletes’ morale and future preparations.
In response, Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe attributed the delay to a possible communication breakdown. Chileshe explained that the Minister had previously informed the team in Paris that payments would be processed post-Games to ensure accurate computation.
“We are processing payments for our esteemed athletes and officials. We may have had a breakdown in communication, but we are addressing it,” Chileshe assured, promising that all payments will be made.
The situation also prompted other athletes, such as boxer Patrick Chinyemba, to voice their concerns about the delayed allowances.
Chileshe reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to its athletes, requesting patience as payments are finalized. He emphasized that the Ministry recognizes the athletes’ contributions and is committed to ensuring timely disbursements in the future.
This development has raised concerns about the reputation of Zambia’s sports administration, with calls for immediate action to restore trust and motivate athletes who continue to represent the nation on the global stage.
