CTPD Tips Government on Flooding Preparedness Ahead of Rains

Must read

The government has been advised to invest in advanced technology and human resources to enhance the accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts and early warnings to ensure communities are well-prepared in responding to impending disasters.

Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) Researcher – Climate Change and Environment Dr. Solomon Mwampikita has noted that in view of the anticipated normal to above-average rainfall in the 2024/2025 rainy season, the government should prioritize constructing and maintaining essential infrastructure, such as drainage systems, dams, and bridges to withstand heavy rainfall and reduce the risk of flooding, especially in the country’s flood-prone areas.

“While the expected increase in rainfall will present immense benefits for the country, especially for hydroelectricity production and agriculture, these challenges have often burdened poor communities in previous years, making it harder on their well-being,” Mwampikita said.

CTPD has further advised the government to strengthen disaster preparedness by allocating sufficient resources to developing and implementing comprehensive disaster preparedness plans, including evacuation procedures and emergency shelters.

“These efforts will not only address flooding but also help prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, especially cholera, which has affected many areas during the rainy seasons,” he said.
