Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele, Commander of the Zambia Army, is currently conducting familiarization tours following his promotion to Lieutenant General on September 12, 2024, by President Hakainde Hichilema.
He visited Ndola yesterday, where he met with Provincial Minister Honourable Elisha Matambo. During the meeting, Lt Gen Zyeele raised alarm over the growing trend of civilians wearing military regalia and highlighted the increase in illicit activities within the country.
The Commander warned that directives will soon be issued to security agencies to ensure that civilians are prohibited from donning military uniforms, stating that legal action will be taken against offenders. He also noted the presence of illegal immigrants in the country, some of whom are former combatants.
Assuring the Provincial Minister of the readiness of security forces, Lt Gen Zyeele emphasized their commitment to addressing any security threats, affirming Zambia’s reputation as a peaceful nation that should focus on development.
In his visit to the mining province, the Commander aimed to interact with officers and soldiers and assess their welfare. Minister Matambo commended the government for creating a peaceful environment conducive to investment and economic activity in the Copperbelt.
He urged journalists to maintain objectivity and professionalism, emphasizing their role as defenders of truth to prevent misinformation.
In addressing the troops, Lt Gen Zyeele called for discipline and adherence to military values, encouraging them to support the current government and uphold the peace Zambia has enjoyed since independence in 1964. He reiterated that meaningful development cannot occur without peace, urging loyalty to the nation and its people.
