Government to Rigorously Pursue Climate-Resilient Agricultural Practices

Must read

President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the agricultural sector by implementing climate-resilient practices. Speaking during the commissioning of Zambeef PLC’s wheat flour milling plant and the launch of the winter maize harvest at Chambatata Farm in Mpongwe, he emphasized the need for the agricultural system to better respond to climate-related challenges.

“The government is dedicated to adopting practices such as irrigation and mechanization,” President Hichilema stated. He highlighted that farming should extend beyond seasonal limitations, advocating for year-round agricultural activities.

To bolster economic growth, he called for increased production that surpasses the immediate needs of the population. “Our economy can only grow if we all work hard to produce not just for ourselves, but also to generate surpluses for export,” he added.

The President expressed satisfaction with Zambeef’s proactive response to the government’s call for early and winter maize planting, especially following the recent drought. He noted, “The harvest of winter maize is vital for our nation’s food security, and Zambeef’s ongoing efforts will ensure a steady supply into early next year.”

President Hichilema also encouraged other farmers and entrepreneurs to emulate Zambeef PLC’s commitment to value chain addition, which is creating jobs and opportunities for Zambians. In addition to wheat farming, Zambeef will now produce wheat flour for both local and export markets.
