A skilled criminal’s rich CV has come to an abrupt end after he was shot and bled excessively while fleeing capture by the police.
According to a police statement, Duncan Mwaba, known popularly as Shi Mpundu, was a criminal on the police wanted list for a series of crimes perpetrated by his den of thieves.
“On November 27, 2024, police received intelligence that the now-deceased suspect and his group were planning to break into a shop at Twikatane Mall in Zingalume.”
Acting on the intelligence, the police managed to apprehend Charles Mbewe Daka, a resident of Matero North and a known associate of the deceased. He had in his possession three small explosives.
“Upon interrogation, Daka revealed that he was scheduled to meet the deceased to plan their criminal activities,” the statement read.
Based on this information, Shimpundu was ambushed in the SOS area but when confronted by the officers, he attempted to flee. “Despite officers firing three warning shots, the suspect persisted in evading arrest. In the ensuing pursuit, the suspect was shot but continued to flee.”
Subsequently, members of the public spotted him hiding in some flowers and alerted the police who found him bleeding severely and rushed him to Matero Level One Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Shi Mpundu was linked to many robberies in different parts of Zambia, including Lusaka, Kitwe, Choma, Kalomo, and Chipata, among others.
