ZESCO Limited has announced that it is adopting a cautious strategy regarding the use of Lake Kariba dam, opting to maintain the current reduced power generation levels despite a slight rise in water levels at the lake.
The Zambezi River Authority has reported that water levels at Lake Kariba have increased to 475.87 meters, just above the minimum operational threshold, thanks to consistent rainfall. However, the reservoir’s usable storage remains critically low at 2.61%, a substantial drop from last year’s 12.32%.
ZESCO spokesperson Matongo Maumbi stated that while the increase in water levels is a positive sign, the available water for hydropower generation is still inadequate for sustainable operations. Therefore, the utility will continue with reduced generation levels while closely monitoring water levels and rainfall trends.
Mr. Maumbi acknowledged the difficulties associated with power rationing but emphasized that ZESCO’s primary duty is to ensure the long-term viability of Lake Kariba.
He cautioned that any premature attempt to boost power generation could further deplete the reservoir, putting the nation at risk if the current heavy rains do not persist.
