The burial ceremony for the late Malawian Vice President Saulos Chilima has taken place in his home village of Ntcheu district.
Meanwhile, a vehicle in the convoy carrying his body on Sunday night rammed into a group of people who had lined the streets to glimpse Chilima’s coffin.
According to the police, some commotion ensued between the people and the police and soldiers in the funeral escort. In the process, one of the vehicles went off the road and hit some people. Four of those hit, including a pregnant woman, died. Others were injured and being treated in hospital.
Police say some people threw stones at government vehicles and officials.
Delivering the eulogy at Chilima’s burial today, family representative Elizabeth Mkandawire Mwanga appealed to Malawians to continue embodying Chilima’s spirit of loving peace and holding a vision for a better Malawi.
President Lazarus Chakwera led the burial ceremony.
