President Hakainde Hichilema yesterday officially commissioned the construction of Maamba Energy Ltd’s Phase II 300MW thermal power plant expansion. This pivotal project, located in Maamba, is a joint venture between ZCCM-IH and Nava Bharat, designed to bolster Zambia’s energy capacity and regional energy trade.
President Hichilema underscored the project’s significance for Zambia’s energy future and urged stakeholders to ensure timely completion. ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson, Mr. Kakenenwa Muyangwa, lauded Maamba Energy Ltd’s environmental stewardship, citing its successful use of low-grade coal and advanced CFBC technology to capture 95% of fly ash. This process supports soil alkalinity and extensive tree planting in rehabilitated mining areas.
Mr. Muyangwa also highlighted ZCCM-IH’s commitment with a USD35 million equity stake and potential USD15 million loan, supporting the USD400 million expansion set to complete by July 2026.
This initiative represents a forward-looking approach to sustainable energy infrastructure in Zambia.
