Zambia Gold Company (ZGC) has approved a budget of 42 million Kwacha for necessary remedial work as preparations begin for the reopening of Kasenseli Gold Mine in Mwinilunga District, North Western Province.
The mine’s operations were suspended by the government in 2021 due to a rise in fatalities linked to illegal mining activities. ZGC’s Board Chairperson, Guy Phiri, announced that the mine is anticipated to resume full operations by next month.
Phiri highlighted that the reopening is expected to generate around 500 jobs, with a strong emphasis on hiring local workers. He also noted that the company has been actively engaging with the Chibwika Royal Establishment to ensure local community involvement in the mining operations.
Phiri emphasized the government’s support for the mine’s reopening, citing the potential for gold to significantly impact the nation’s economic development.
ZGC Chief Executive Officer Joseph Lungu underscored the company’s commitment to conducting operations safely and legally. Among the compliance measures being undertaken is the relocation of the gold processing plant to meet operational standards.
