A tragic incident has occurred at the Green Mountain Tailing Dam 52 in Kitwe, resulting in the deaths of five illegal miners.
The collapse happened around 2:30 PM today burying the miners beneath a substantial amount of soil. Emergency response teams promptly recovered the bodies, which have been taken to the Kitwe Teaching Hospital Mortuary.
Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba confirmed the incident and noted that the situation has been brought under control following panic among onlookers. He added that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the dam’s collapse.
Kitwe has a history of mine accidents, particularly involving illegal miners who often work in abandoned mineral sites.
