President Hakainde Hichilema this morning hosted the Energy Technical Working Group at State House, where the group presented the draft Country Energy Compact. The compact, according to the President, serves as a framework reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing affordable, reliable, and clean energy for Zambia.
Speaking during the session, President Hichilema emphasized that achieving the Vision 2030 goal of becoming a prosperous middle-income country is contingent on achieving energy sufficiency. He described the current drought as a wake-up call, underscoring the need for Zambia to diversify its energy sources and reduce its reliance on hydro power.
“The success of our economic agenda is dependent on the availability of energy,” he stated.
The President also highlighted the importance of opening up the energy sector to allow broader participation, not only for Zambians to consume energy but also to invest in it. He thanked the Cooperating Partners Group for their continued support in developing the energy compact and contributing to the sector’s growth.
“We are determined to make Zambia energy sufficient,” President Hichilema concluded.
