Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha has welcomed the Constitutional Court’s decision to bar former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu from contesting the 2026 elections.
Kabesha noted that the court’s ruling is clear that Lungu had served two terms and urged him to explore other ventures.
Kabesha said that politicians, regardless of their popularity, have term limits and should respect them.
He also advised against entertaining ideas that certain individuals have a monopoly on wisdom or that there is only one person capable of being president.
The Attorney General expressed confidence in the judiciary, stating that the ruling gives hope to the Zambian people that the Constitutional Court can decide and determine constitutional issues before it.
The court’s decision was unanimous, with a seven-member panel declaring Lungu ineligible to contest future elections.
The ruling centered on the interpretation of sections 2 and 7 of the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections Act, as well as the repealed Article 35 of the Constitution.
Kabesha cautioned against commenting on sub judice matters, emphasising the importance of allowing the court to determine cases independently.
